SDRN Annual Sustainable Development Research Conference 2008:
‘Sustainable development: new issues, new challenges’

Registration is now fully booked for this year’s SDRN Annual Sustainable Development Research Conference.

The Annual Conference is the Network’s annual forum for the dissemination and discussion of the new and emerging issues prevalent within sustainable development research and policy-making. Bringing together up to 150 representatives from research, academia, policy and the business and NGO sectors, the event provides a unique networking opportunity for SDRN members.

2008 conference session topics include: ‘Knowledge transfer at the research-policy interface’; ‘Economic policy as sustainable development? Housing growth and sustainable new communities’; ‘Culture, ethnicity and sustainable behaviour’; a RELU-sponsored session on food and the environment ‘Healthy diet, healthy countryside?’; and a final panel discussion considering the question ‘Sustainable development: a corrupted ideology?’.

Confirmed speakers include: Prof. Robert Watson (Chief Scientific Adviser, Defra); Prof. Judith Petts (University of Birmingham); Prof. John Holmes (University of Oxford), Prof. Henry Buller (University of Exeter); Prof. Richard Tiffin (University of Reading); Prof. Tim Lang (City University); Becky Willis (Vice-Chair, SDC); Prof. Peter Guthrie (University of Cambridge); Dr. Mike Raco (KCL); Prof. Yvonne Rydin (UCL), David Fell (Director, Brook Lyndhurst); Tom Burke (Environmental Policy Advisor, Rio Tinto) and Jill Rutter (Head of Strategy and Sustainable Development, Defra) and Maria Adebowale (Director, Capacity Global).

The provisional Conference Agenda is now available to download. (N.B. Due to unforseen circumstances Prof. Bill Stow - Director General, Evidence and Strategy, Defra - rather than Prof. Bob Watson, will be providing the keynote opening speech of the Conference. 

The Conference will be held at the RSA, 8 John Adam Street, London WC2N 6EZ on Thursday 11th September 2008, from 9.30am - 5pm. An EPSRC-sponsored evening drinks reception and ESRC/NERC Young Researcher Poster Session will follow from 5 – 7pm.
